Teen of the Week

Teen of the Week
In the past, the Sunday News-Register only accepted Teen of the Week nominations from high school principals and guidance counselors.

Now, in addition to school officials, anyone in the public can send nominations to the newspaper for consideration. Nominated high school seniors will continue to be assessed based the students' all-around accomplishments.

Any high school senior selected as a Teen of the Week is eligible for a $1,000 scholarship to attend Wheeling Jesuit University, but choices for nominees need not be limited to students already planning to attend that college.

Nominations are accepted for high school seniors from any high school in Brooke, Hancock, Ohio, Marshall, Tyler and Wetzel counties in West Virginia and Jefferson, Belmont, Harrison and Monroe counties in Ohio.

Students who have obtained academic achievements, participated in student government, school clubs and sports teams are likely candidates for the Teen of the Week nomination.

However, nominees also should include seniors who do civic work, are active school and community volunteers, work for their churches or temples, have outstanding careers in Scouting or 4-H, hold down interesting jobs outside the classroom, have unique hobbies and are "good citizens" even if they are not "straight A" students or recognized school leaders.
